Opportunity Finder
Scan your Search Console data for growth ideas: striking distance keywords, low-CTR pages, snippet candidates and more.
4 min read Updated
What is it?
The Opportunity Finder scans your Google Search Console queries and pages for growth ideas. Its start screen says Find what's available — not just what broke. Where the Anomaly Wizard finds problems, the Opportunity Finder finds chances to grow.
It looks at your top 300 queries and top 300 pages, ranked by impressions, not clicks. This finds pages that are seen often but not yet clicked.
Why use it?
- To get a short list of keywords and pages that can win more clicks.
- To see an estimate of the impact for each idea.
- To check the daily numbers behind each idea.
Before you start
Connect Search Console. Without it you see Connect Search Console to use the Opportunity Finder — it scans Search Console queries and pages.
How to use it
Open the tab
In Advanced Analytics, click Opportunity Finder. The header shows your project name and dates.
Pick your dates
Choose a range in the date picker. Changing it later clears the results.
Run the scan
Click Find Opportunities. You see Scanning Search Console for opportunities…
Review the groups
Results are grouped by check. The first group is open. Click a group name to open or close it.
Check the data
Click a card to see its details, then click View daily data to see the numbers day by day.
Understanding the screen
Checks
| Check | Rule |
|---|---|
| Striking Distance Keywords | Queries at position 11–20 with 200+ impressions. See striking distance. |
| Low-CTR Rewrite Candidates | Queries with 500+ impressions and a CTR below 60% of the typical CTR for their position |
| Featured Snippet Candidates | Queries at position 2–5 with 100+ impressions that start with how, what, why, when, best, vs or guide. A featured snippet is a highlighted answer at the top of Google. |
| Visibility Without Clicks | Queries or pages with 200+ impressions and zero clicks |
| Page Striking Distance | Pages at position 6–15 with 300+ impressions |
Prism also says what is not covered: Not covered yet: keyword cannibalization and verified SERP-feature detection — both need data this project doesn't currently ingest. For cannibalization, see Keywords Breakdown.
Typical CTR in this scan
This scan uses its own fixed industry estimates of CTR. They are not your site's own numbers, and they differ from the Typical CTR in Category Breakdown.
| Position | Typical CTR |
|---|---|
| 1–3 | 28% |
| 4–6 | 15% |
| 7–10 | 8% |
| 11–20 | 3% |
| Beyond 20 | 1% |
Results
The top of the results shows rows analyzed and opportunities found. Each group title shows how many cards it has.
Each card has a title, a short description and, for some checks, an impact line such as Potential additional clicks/period: +N. Hover the impact line to see how it was worked out.
| Check | How the impact is estimated |
|---|---|
| Striking Distance Keywords | Impressions × 8% (a typical top-10 CTR), minus current clicks |
| Low-CTR Rewrite Candidates | Impressions × the typical CTR for the position, minus current clicks |
| Page Striking Distance | Impressions × 15% (a typical top-5 CTR), minus current clicks |
| Featured Snippet Candidates, Visibility Without Clicks | No estimate |
These are rough estimates, not promises.
Card details and daily data
Click a card to open it. You see small boxes such as Query or Page, Position, Impressions, Current clicks or Current CTR, and a note on how the impact was estimated.
View daily data opens two tables, Current period and Previous period, with Date, Clicks, Impressions, CTR and Position. The previous period is always the period of the same length just before your range.
Inside you may see Loading daily data…, Failed to load daily data. or No rows for this period.
Example
For example, the scan shows a Striking Distance Keywords card for "local seo checklist" at position 13. Click it, then click View daily data, and check that the position is steady over the period. Then add a section to the page that answers that query, and link to it from related pages.
Tips
- Use a longer range, such as 90 days, so more queries meet the volume thresholds.
- Start with Low-CTR Rewrite Candidates. A better title is a quick change.
- Check the same pages in Category Breakdown to see their category.
- Click Re-run scan after your dates or data change.
Common issues
| Message | What to do |
|---|---|
| No opportunities found for this range — Either GSC isn't connected, or nothing in this data met the volume thresholds this scan uses. | Connect Search Console, or pick a longer range. |
| Scan failed — Something went wrong finding opportunities. | Click Try again. |
| Failed to load daily data. | Close the group and open it again, or click Re-run scan. Then click View daily data again. |
Frequently asked questions
Does the Opportunity Finder need Google Analytics?
No. It scans Search Console queries and pages, so it needs Search Console only.
Does it check keyword cannibalization?
Not in this scan. Prism says on screen that cannibalization and verified SERP-feature detection are not covered yet. Use Keywords Breakdown for cannibalization.
Why did the scan find nothing?
Either Search Console isn't connected, or nothing in your data met the volume thresholds the scan uses. Try a longer date range.
Is a Featured Snippet Candidate a confirmed snippet?
No. It is a guess based on position and the wording of the query. Check the Google results page yourself before you invest time.
